Un ex secretario de prensa de George W. Bush confirma la maniobras del gobierno de Estados Unidos para engañar a su población y justificar, con la complicidad de los medios, la lucha contra el "terrorismo".
El ex secretario de prensa del presidente Bush, Scott McClellan, acaba de publicar un libro titulado "Lo que pasó: dentro de la Casa Blanca de Bush y la cultura del engaño en Washington".
El furor político y mediático que causó proviene de dos revelaciones: cuando ordenó la invasión de Irak, la administración Bush sabía que Irak no tenía armas de destrucción masiva y montó una poderosa “campaña de propaganda” para llevar a la opinión pública norteamericana y mundial a aceptar una “guerra innecesaria”; los grandes medios de comunicación fueron “cómplices activos” de esa campaña, no sólo porque no cuestionaron a las fuentes gubernamentales, sino también porque encendieron el fervor patriótico y censuraron las posiciones escépticas contrarias a la guerra.
Estas revelaciones y las reacciones que causaron tienen implicaciones que las trascienden. Ante todo, es sorprendente todo este escándalo, pues tales revelaciones no traen nada nuevo.
Las informaciones en que se basan eran conocidas al momento de la invasión, a partir de fuentes independientes.
En ellas me basé en aquel momento para justificar en varios artículos mi total oposición a una guerra que, además de “innecesaria”, era injusta e ilegal. Esto significa que las voces independientes fueron estigmatizadas como ideológicas y antipatrióticas, tal como hoy criticar a Israel equivale a ser considerado antisemita.
En 2001, en Egipto, antes de que la máquina de propaganda comenzara a devorar la verdad, el propio secretario de Estado Colin Powell decía que no había ninguna información sólida de que Irak tuviese armas de destrucción masiva.
Esto me lleva a la segunda implicación de estas revelaciones: el futuro del periodismo. La máquina propagandística del Departamento de Defensa se asentó en tres tácticas: imponer la presencia de generales de reserva en todos los noticieros de televisión, con el objetivo de demostrar la existencia de armas de destrucción masiva; tener a todos los medios bajo observación y llamar a sus directores o propietarios ante la mínima señal de escepticismo u oposición a la guerra; invitar a periodistas de confianza de todo el mundo para convencerlos de
la existencia de las armas y luego enviarlos de regreso a sus países poseídos de la misma convicción belicista.
Vimos esto, trágica y grotescamente, en muchos países de Europa y América latina.
La verdad es que en Washington y en todo el país circulaban por los medios independientes informaciones que contradecían ese “lavado de cerebros”, muchas provenientes de generales y de antiguos funcionarios de la Casa Blanca.
¿Por qué no se les ocurrió a esos periodistas “de confianza” verificar en forma cruzada las fuentes, como les exigía su código deontológico?
Para bien del periodismo, algunos de ellos procuraron resistir la presión y sufrieron las consecuencias.
Jessica Yellin, hoy en la CNN, en aquel momento en el canal ABC, confesó públicamente que los directores y dueños del canal la presionaron para que escribiera notas a favor de la guerra y censuraron todas las que eran más críticas.
Un productor fue despedido por proponer un programa con la mitad de las posiciones a favor de la guerra y la otra mitad de las posiciones en contra.
Quien resistió fue considerado antipatriota y amigo de los terroristas.
Esto mismo ocurrió en nuestros países. ¿Cuántos periodistas fueron sujetos a la misma intimidación? ¿Cuántos artículos de opinión contrarios a la guerra fueron rechazados?
Y los que escribieron propaganda e intimidaron a sus subordinados, ¿alguna vez se retractarán, pedirán disculpas, presentarán su renuncia?
Es que ellos colaboraron con un crimen: un millón de iraquíes muertos, decenas de miles de soldados norteamericanos heridos y muertos y un país totalmente destruido.
Todo esto habrá sido el precio no de la democracia –ridículo concebir como democrático a este Estado colonial y más fracturado que Somalia–, sino del
control de las reservas de petróleo en el Golfo y de la promoción de los intereses petroleros, de la industria militar y de la reconstrucción, en la que los dueños de los medios tienen fuertes inversiones.
Para disfrazar el problema moral de los cómplices de la guerra y la destrucción, algunos comentadores de derecha han recurrido a la más desconcertante y desesperada justificación de la guerra: si no estaban las armas de destrucción masiva, por lo menos estaba la convicción de que ellas existían.
Ahora, el libro de McClellan acaba de eliminar ese argumento. ¿A qué recurrirán ahora? Lo trágico es que la máquina de propaganda continúa montada y ahora está dirigida a Irán.
Su funcionamiento será tanto más difícil cuanto mejores condiciones tengan los periodistas para cumplir con su código deontológico.
